The Educational Problem

The educational challenge was:

1. To increase engagement and motivation of students
2. To ensure the quality of learning across subject boundaries
3. To develop skills required by employers:

  • Critical thinking, problem solving, data interpretation and analysis, synthesizing information
  • Self-direction, planning, self-discipline, adaptability, initiative
  • Teamwork, collaboration, cooperation
  • Information and communication technology (ITC) literacy
  • Collaboration across Networks

The problem was how to restructure the broad course of Electronics delivered to future aviation engineers in order to:

  • To ensure better knowledge and competencies of the students
  • Take advantage of tech tools to facilitate learning
  • Use cloud services to create a self-paced, learner-centered classroom
  • Organize activities to ensure an enjoyable implementation experience

The Solution

In order to achieve these objectives and resolve problems, a new trialogical educational approach was introduced with

  • Using cloud computing technologies to organize environment for collaborative work
  • Applying up-to-date communication tools for student-students and student-teachers connection
  • Continuous monitoring and assistance of students’ activities

Trialogical approach was used to address

  • Team work on shared object (reports)
  • Weekly assignments and continuous work (3 one month long course projects)
  • Continuous monitoring and teacher assistance in this process, providing help on request
  • Reporting on the individual contribution of each team member to the overall project
  • Respect to meeting the deadline (after the prescribed date the project is locked for editing)

Key Experiences

By integrating technology into learning experiences, students are more engaged in their learning inside and outside of university. Cloud computing environment promotes a dynamic content and course delivery and helps students to exploit computing technology for active learning. The most important feature is collaborative study environment for students and teachers. Shared applications and documents on the cloud, such as Google Apps allow for more social lessons and students get an opportunity to collaborate productively using technology. Students benefit by learning this way, integrating subject-matter knowledge with a better understanding and confidence of using cloud platform for their own professional career plans. Digital technology also allows teachers to keep track of students’ progress all the time without spending hours on marking – thereby creating unprecedented opportunities for personalised learning.
